HillsRUs rolls weekly on Wednesdays

Route often includes Hwy 9, Page Mill, Old La Honda, Kings Mountain, West Alpine or Tunitas Creek. Always be prepared for variable weather on Skyline. Foul weather in the hills keeps the ride in the valley.

Start location and route announced Monday prior, via wwbc-rides email list and this page (scroll down to the blog).

Meet at 8:45 AM and roll at 9:00 AM departure. DE riders will depart first, C+ will follow.

Ride Leaders rotate weekly - Don Johann, Shawnery Hardin, Jack Jones and Steve Rempel, with guest appearances by Michael Khaw, Gary Virshup, Cathy Switzer, and others.

A selection of routes can be found in the WW Ride with GPS Route Catalog > use tag "HRU".

Entertainment provided by the weather forecasting applications...

3 of 4 say 10% chance of rain Wednesday AM, 1 says sunny all day (this one I like!!)

Don’t want to risk going to the coast if it is even a hint of rain, so… we are sticking to this side of the hills.

Five Bumps TO Montebello, from Shoup Park, Los Altos.
Meet at 8:45 AM, Roll at 9:00 AM

    Distance 40 miles
    Elevation Gain 4,425’

    Route >

Weather - forecast as of when you click the link. Select your favorite service!

Dark Sky (31% chance of rain at 9 AM)
Tomorrow.io (5% chance of rain at 9 AM)
Weather.api (sunny most of the ride)
National Weather Service (10% chance of rain at 9 AM)

Snacks/lunch - bring to enjoy atop Montebello

    And yes, rain cancels!

We've been trying to get this ride in since Big Basin opened but the weather has always been too hot given the limited water supply on the route. The weather is a little on the cool side this Wed but the days are getting shorter so it's time to do it. Two water bottles are recommended and we will top off our water at the CDF Fire Station on Skyline. There is no water available in Big Basin so this is the last chance until we get back to Skyline.

Starting Location and Time: 9:00AM departure from Monta Vista Park in Cupertino (On Voss Ave off of S Foothill Blvd)

    Elevation Gain: 6800

    Distance: 55 miles

Lunch:  Bring Lunch to eat in Big Basin Park

Starting location and time: Meet at the Pioneer parking in Woodside: 8:45 AM for a 9:00 AM departure.

I sooooo wanted to take you all back to Big Basin, but the weather gods just have not cooperated all summer and fall... so far.  Lack of water in Big Basin means we need cool weather, and hard as it is to imagine, we're about to get hot again, and when it gets hot, it's time to go back to Half Moon Bay.  The chip seal will hopefully be double swept by now.  If you want to add some bonus miles, start at Shoup about 8AM and meet us the the Pioneer.

Starting location and time: Meet at Shoup Park in Los Altos; 8:45 AM for a 9:00 AM departure.

The forecast for Tuesday night and Wednesday morning is looking a little iffy, so let's stay on this side of the coastal divide this week.  When I tested this ride out a few years ago on a few friends, I called it my "tour of gratuitous climbs and secret passages".  We'll do a vertical mile of climbing without ever getting too far from Shoup, should inclement weather chase us back to the start.  See the Los Altos, Palo Alto, and Portola hills like you've never seen them before.
