HillsRUs

HillsRUs rolls weekly on Wednesdays

Route often includes Hwy 9, Page Mill, Old La Honda, Kings Mountain, West Alpine or Tunitas Creek. Always be prepared for variable weather on Skyline. Foul weather in the hills keeps the ride in the valley.

Start location and route announced Monday prior, via wwbc-rides email list and this page (scroll down to the blog).

Meet at 8:45 AM and roll at 9:00 AM departure. DE riders will depart first, C+ will follow.

Ride Leaders rotate weekly - Don Johann, Shawnery Hardin, Jack Jones and Steve Rempel, with guest appearances by Michael Khaw, Gary Virshup, Cathy Switzer, and others.

A selection of routes can be found in the WW Ride with GPS Route Catalog > use tag "HRU".

I'm resisting the urge to post my own novel stuff, so far, and I'll stick with something from the library that's challenging but local.

Assemble at the Shoup Park parking lot by 8:45 for a 9:00 departure

45.1 miles, with 5181 feet of climbing.

    Lunch stop at Sky Londa.

I'm going to start once again by sandbagging.  I realize I have not done a big climb in close to 2 months, so let's go do some exquisite torture - Umunhum.  Shawnery did this a few weeks ago, but had only one crazy taker on New Year's eve (rhymes with Stewart), and of course he had to toss in Redwood Gulch.  But since I'm not as crazy, or as crazy strong, we'll do a much more reasonable route.

Assemble at the Monta Vista parking lot by 8:45 for a 9:00 departure, with D/E riders launching a bit before the Social Climbers.

55.6 miles, with 5750 feet of climbing.

Bring food for lunch at the top, or maybe Blossom Hill Park, depending on our timing.

With rain in the forecast, I've pulled this very local, relatively short route from the WW archives, also in case people have some sort of plans for later in the day and need time to prepare/recover. Expect an update Wednesday morning on whether this ride is actually happening or not.

Starting Location: Shoup Park (park up above in the church parking lot next to Foothill)

Start Time: Assemble at 8:45 for a 9:00 departure. Rain cancels.

    Distance: 29 miles

    Elevation: 3260 feet

Lunch: This ride is so short, it should finish before lunch.

    Huckleberries Christmas Eve Um Ride

    Dec. 24th 2025

    C+D/4.6(6642)/58

Meet at 8: 45 for a 9am start at Monta Vista Park in Cupertino.

I'm well aware that the weather outlook is for rain, but it's been like this for a few days, and not much to speak of. When I rode Saturday, it was 80% all day and not one drop of perception!!! Unless it's REALLY raining, I'll be there at the start. It's hard for me to know what's going on down in the flats.

Lunch: Will be at the top of Um so bring something to enjoy.

    58 miles, 6642’ of climbing.

OK, for my first try at this, I'm postponing my more esoteric route ideas for something tried and true. Taking the existing Rodeo Gulch loop and adding an out and back to the Medicine Buddha, just for fun.

Starting Location and Time:Parking Lot .3 mi past the dam at Lexington Reservoir. There is a $6 fee to park there (Credit/Debit Card). There is also a free dirt area across the street from the parking lot that can handle about 8 cars.at 8:45 for a 9:00 departure, with D/E riders launching a bit before the Social Climbers. Rain cancels.

57 miles, with 5135 feet of climbing.

Lunch in Scotts Valley at Sitanen Park.

I've once again been off the bike for close to a month, so we're going to do something a little easier, but also kinda fun, since it's a very atypical HRU that only I would do.

Assemble at the Shoup Park parking lot (park up above or in the church parking) at 8:45 for a 9:00 departure, with D/E riders launching a bit before the Social Climbers.

59 miles, with 4250 feet of climbing.

Lunch at the Safeway off Polhemus (Starbucks and the Italian bakery also beckon).

Weather from Randoplan (surprisingly moderate temps with a little cloud cover)

I never noticed how many tree farms were along Skyline/Summit until I rode up there after Christmas last year and saw many signs by what looked like long driveways. This year, let's see how many places there are now.

This is a stock HRU route starting from Shoup Park going up Page Mill, along Skyline and Summit, down to and around Lexington Reservoir, and wiggling through Los Gatos, Saratoga, and Sunnyvale to Foothill, and back to the start.

58 miles and 5200 feet of elevation gain.

D/E riders are welcome to track down the tree farms on Gist by staying on Old Santa Cruz Highway, going around the other side of Lexington Reservoir to Bear Creek road over Hwy 17, then climbing Black and Gist, and backtracking to the start along Summit, Skyline, and Page Mill.

Starting Location and Time: Shoup (park up above in the church parking lot next to Foothill) at 8:45 for a 9:00 departure, with D/E riders launching a bit before the Social Climbers.  Rain cancels.

Lunch: Bring food for Redwood Estates Upper Park. Expect everyone wanting to get going quickly, depending on the weather.

    Huckleberries HRU
    The Beach Boardwalk Ride

    Nov. 26th 2025

    C+D/4(6454)/64

Meet at 8:45 for a 9am at Lexington Reservoir

Come out and enjoy, what may be, one of the last 70 degree days out on our bikes, while we still can!!

We'll make our way from Lexington Reservoir, down to The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Then climb our way back to Lexington Reservoir by way of Empire Grade and Zyante. This is actually a very close version of the first ride I did to Santa Cruz, over 5 years ago now, how time flies when you're on a road bike!! Ever since that ride, I look forward to making it back as often as possible!!!

Lunch: Will be in Steamer Lane Supply, across the street from the lighthouse in Santa Cruz.

    64 miles, 6454’ of climbing.

This is still one of my favorite routes and the weather looks like it will be favorable.  It will be a little on the cold side so bring layers (especially for the descent on Tunitas). Those desiring a longer ride can ride to the start.

As usual, Faster Riders will start first followed by the Social Climbers

Starting Location: Parking Lot behind Pioneer Saloon in Woodside

Start Time: be there by 8:45 for a 9 am departure.

    Distance: 48 miles

    Elevation: 5500 feet

Lunch: Bring or Buy at San Benito House in Half Moon Bay

    Routehttps://ridewithgps.com/routes/38356399

Regroups: Top of Kings, Top of Lobitos, Top of Purisima
