HillsRUs

HillsRUs rolls weekly on Wednesdays

Route often includes Hwy 9, Page Mill, Old La Honda, Kings Mountain, West Alpine or Tunitas Creek. Always be prepared for variable weather on Skyline. Foul weather in the hills keeps the ride in the valley.

Start location and route announced Monday prior, via wwbc-rides email list and this page (scroll down to the blog).

Meet at 8:45 AM and roll at 9:00 AM departure. DE riders will depart first, C+ will follow.

Ride Leaders rotate weekly - Don Johann, Shawnery Hardin, Jack Jones and Steve Rempel, with guest appearances by Michael Khaw, Gary Virshup, Cathy Switzer, and others.

A selection of routes can be found in the WW Ride with GPS Route Catalog > use tag "HRU".

It's more likely than not that HRU will be cancelled this week, due to the start of the rainy season (can it really be here already).  But just in case, I'm posting a silly ride that includes the Kittridge Mile of Pain, which I used to do as an after work ride for many years.  I found this route last year when I was perusing the WW catalog of rides tagged as HRU.

Assemble at Shoup Park at 8:45 for a 9:00 departure, with D/E riders launching a bit before the Social Climbers.

38 miles, with 3900' of climbing.

Lunch - We'll do an impromptu lunch at the top of Bohlman, so bring what you need.

I'm a sucker for tradition, so we'll start from Shoup Park again and do a Pescadero loop. Going out to and climbing Old La Honda, we'll descend the other side and take 84 to San Gregorio, then along Stage Road to have lunch in Pescadero. Returning along Pescadero Creek Road, we'll climb Haskins Hill and west Alpine Road, and down Page Mill.

The weather is forecast to be relatively mild, getting warmer on this side of Skyline, so it should be a pretty pleasant day.

65 miles with 6500' of climbing.

At long last Higgins Rd has finally been repaired !!   We can now do our popular Half Moon Bay Ride from Woodside. And, yes, we will be going up Kings for the 3rd HRU in a row. Weather on the coast will be pleasantly cool while it will be hot here in the valley

Let's go climb King's Mountain again, but this time we'll follow that up with my variation on what I think of as Paul's Redwood Ramble, doing a number of steep, but generally shady out and backs in the coastal redwoods.

Assemble at Shoup Park at 8:45 for a 9:00 departure, with D/E riders launching a bit before the Social Climbers.

Last restroom and water until our late lunch is 15.5 miles into the ride, in Huddart Park.  Make sure to load up on water for the 4 climbs.  Bear Gulch has a short, but very steep climb in the sun to start.  Most of the rest of the climbing is relatively shady.

    57 miles, 6100' of climbing(.

Lunch - Bring a lunch to eat at Valerie's house at 2100 Bear Gulch road (very steep driveway), about 38 miles into the ride.

The heat is returning.  Normally this is an occasion to head for the coast and come back Tunitas to the Pioneer, but after doing that twice in the past three weeks, I'm going to take us on a ride that Valerie and Mike introduced me to back during the pandemic - a coastal loop from La Honda that dives into the redwoods on the way out to Gazos and beyond, with scenic coastal vistas on the way back.

Assemble at the La Honda Market at 8:45 for a 9:00 departure, with D/E riders launching a bit before the Social Climbers.  Park curbside along 84 in front of the shops, or park off the road next to the fence on the other side of 84.  Don't park past the fence, as this blocks the view of drivers exiting the adjacent driveway.

There is a restroom and water 2.6 miles into the ride, at Sam McDonald Park.

67 miles, 4360' of climbing.  Note the route change made on Monday at 3:30 PM.  I moved the lunch from Pescadero to Costanoa, as the timing is better, and Costanoa is a kind of cool place many of you likely haven't been to in a while.

Lunch - The Costanoa Resort, at mile 35.

If you haven't done the Bike Hut Challenge yet, you're out of luck on this ride unless you miss the turnoff from 84. Please inform the ride leader if you plan on doing so.

With the break in the weather, we're bringing the start of the ride back to Shoup Park this week, climbing Old La Honda, checking the road condition on the descent down West Old La Honda then climbing Alpine Road and having lunch at Alpine Lake. From there we will take Skyline to Highway 9, climb Pierce, and *handwave* take some back roads to Foothill and back to Shoup.

Starting Location and Time>  Shoup Park at 8:45 for a 9:00 departure. Everyone will leave at the same time unless the Social Climbers are talking too much ;-)
