HillsRUs

HillsRUs rolls weekly on Wednesdays

Route often includes Hwy 9, Page Mill, Old La Honda, Kings Mountain, West Alpine or Tunitas Creek. Always be prepared for variable weather on Skyline. Foul weather in the hills keeps the ride in the valley.

Start location and route announced Monday prior, via wwbc-rides email list and this page (scroll down to the blog).

Meet at 8:45 AM and roll at 9:00 AM departure. DE riders will depart first, C+ will follow.

Ride Leaders rotate weekly - Don Johann, Shawnery Hardin, Jack Jones and Steve Rempel, with guest appearances by Michael Khaw, Gary Virshup, Cathy Switzer, and others.

A selection of routes can be found in the WW Ride with GPS Route Catalog > use tag "HRU".

I'm cancelling for predicted rain, starting around Noon in the urban areas.

Jasmine suggested, to honor Peter, the San Bruno Mountain route, including Guadalupe Canyon Parkway, site of Peter's successful Everesting attempt.  I can't think of a finer tribute than to share the roads he's ridden.  I'm crying as I type this.

Meet at the Pioneer Hotel in Woodside around 8:45 for a 9:00 AM departure.

The forecast weather is for rain.  Wet roads or threatening skies cancel this ride.  Stay tuned for updates.

Lunch:  Los Curates Tacqueira or bring your own.

Meet at the intersection of 84 and 35 at 8:45 for a 9:00 AM departure. We'll have two groups unless it's a small turnout due to weather, with the D/E speedsters launching first, followed by the C+/D Social Climbers. Rain, not sprinkles, cancel and wet roads are a go. As long as it's not really raining I'll be there for the start!! This route provides safe descents during the wettest parts but will need to be careful descending Portola Redwoods State Park. There is the bailout option of skipping the park and just ascending West Alpine.

There is ample parking along Skyline on both sides between Alice's and Skywood Trading Post and is legal, you should see it up here on the weekends

    Distance: 55 miles

    Elevation Gain: 5,459'

Lunch: Bring to enjoy at Portola Redwoods State Park (or buy at Skylonda Trading Post at start of ride)

The weather looks suitable for a Pre-Thanksgiving ride along the coast so let's do a long time favorite. We will take a short detour through Skyine College before descending Sharp Park to Pacifica  and then down to Half Moon Bay for lunch before returning via Tunitas

Meet by the Pioneer Saloon in Woodside at 8:45 for a 9:00 departure. There will be two groups.  The DE group will launch first followed by the Social Climbers.

60 miles with 5000 feet of elevation gain.

Right now the forecast looks like rain, so keep an eye out for a likely cancellation.  But just in case the weather forecast changes...  This is the same ride I posted 8 weeks ago, but had to cancel due to poor AQI numbers.

Let's do some old friends, but in a different directions than we have in recent times.

Redwood Gulch to 9 to Skyline to Alpine, followed by 84, West Old La Honda, and for something really new, we'll come down 84 and take the loop back to Shoup.  I really wanted to take 9 all the way to Skyline in lieu of Redwood, but Quickmap shows there are currently a number of one way controls to Redwood Gulch from Tollgate while they continue to clear old slides.

Meet at Shoup at 8:45 for a 9:00 AM departure.  We'll have two groups, with the D/E speedsters launching first, followed by the Social Climbers.

Lunch:  Buy food/drink at the La Honda Market, to take up to the duck pond for shade and nature's own web foot entertainment.

SR 130 is open with one way traffic control at the construction site.  This is the short edition. Kincaid is an additional bonus out 'n back, but not included as part of this route.

Meet at Cataldi Park, San Jose at 9:15 for a 9:30 departure

    46.8 miles, 5,312' of climbing
Lunch - bring food to enjoy at the observatory

It's November! Winter is on the way, let's visit my favorite coast before any rains arrive... Coastal Kinda Classic - Up Page Mill, descend W Alpine and head to the Bike Hut. Enjoy the Redwoods up Tunitas Creek to Skyline, and return to Shoup via Page Mill.

Meet at Shoup Park at 8:45 for a 9:00 AM departure.  We'll have two groups, with the D/E speedsters launching first, followed by the C+/D Social Climbers.

    Distance: 63 miles
    Elevation Gain: 7,117'
Lunch: Bring to enjoy at The Bike Hut (or back track up 84 and buy at La Honda Country Market)

Now that the temperatures have cooled off it's a good time to do this ride again. The county website shows no closures on Eureka Canyon

Starting Location: Parking Lot .3 mi past the dam at Lexington Reservoir. There is a $6 fee to park there (Credit/Debit Card). There is also a free dirt area across the street from the parking lot that can handle about 8 cars.

Directions: take the Bear Creek Rd exit off of Hwy 17, go across Hwy 17 and turn left like you were getting on 17. Take Alma Bridge Rd and go .6 mi to the parking lot just past the dam

Start Time: be there by 8:45 for a 9 am departure. Faster riders will depart first followed by the Social Climbers

    Distance: 62 miles

    Elevation: 5000 feet

Lunch: Bring or Buy to eat across the street from the Corralitos Market at mile 35

This is a special edition of HRU, with Shawnery taking the helm for a birthday ride.  It's always the dealer's choice, and Shawnery has a special treat for you - Alba - maybe the most epic climb in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

NOTE the start at Castle Rock State Park, 8:45 for a 9:00 AM start.

Parking is $10 in the main lot, but there is free parking just a little ways up the road.  Meet at the main lot for the ride start.

59 miles and 7400' of climbing for the D/E Speedy Group.

55 miles and 6500' of climbing for the C+ Social Climbers (The social climbers will skip the Las Cumbres out and back, near the start).

Make sure and load up with water in Boulder Creek before Alba and Empire Grade.  At the bottom of Jamison Creek, load up again, as this will be the last water before the end of the ride at Castlerock Park.

Lunch - Bring or buy lunch in Boulder to eat in Big Basin Park.
