HillsRUs

HillsRUs rolls weekly on Wednesdays

Route often includes Hwy 9, Page Mill, Old La Honda, Kings Mountain, West Alpine or Tunitas Creek. Always be prepared for variable weather on Skyline. Foul weather in the hills keeps the ride in the valley.

Start location and route announced Monday prior, via wwbc-rides email list and this page (scroll down to the blog).

Meet at 8:45 AM and roll at 9:00 AM departure. DE riders will depart first, C+ will follow.

Ride Leaders rotate weekly - Don Johann, Shawnery Hardin, Jack Jones and Steve Rempel, with guest appearances by Michael Khaw, Gary Virshup, Cathy Switzer, and others.

A selection of routes can be found in the WW Ride with GPS Route Catalog > use tag "HRU".

It's time we dug out one of our winter routes.  The rain should end Tuesday night so the roads will be somewhat dry by the time of the ride and it won't be as cold as it has been

Meet at Shoup Park at 8:45 for a 9:00 departure. The DE group will launch first followed by the Social Climbers (C+D)

40 miles with 4400 feet of elevation gain.

Right now the forecast is for rain, so keep an eye out for a possible cancellation.  But just in case the weather forecast changes, this is the same ride we did 8 weeks ago.  Since we had such a thin herd that day, due to the forecasted rain (which amazingly did not materialize), I'm going to post it again, and hope for the same luck.  This ride has lots of options for bailing back to Shoup, should the need arise.  We won't drop down into La Honda unless it once again looks like dry roads.

Let's again do some old friends, but in different directions than we have in recent times.

Redwood Gulch to 9 to Skyline to Alpine, followed by 84, West Old La Honda, and for something really new, we'll come down 84 and take the loop back to Shoup.

Meet at Shoup at 8:45 for a 9:00 AM departure.  We'll have two groups, with the D/E speedsters launching first, followed by the Social Climbers.

Lunch:  Buy food/drink at the La Honda Market, to take up to the duck pond for shade and nature's own web foot entertainment.

Meet at 9:45 for a 10 AM departure from Shoup Park for the first HRU of 2024.  Should be drier and a bit warmer.

We'll stick around Portola Valley.  Expect wet roads.  Rain cancels.
43 miles and 4,100' of climbing.

    No lunch planned, bring snacks.

C+D/E(4451)/47 HRU does Sierra and Calaveras

Calaveras via Sierra. Meet at Cataldi Park, San Jose at 9:15 for a 9:30 departure on THURSDAY the 28th

    47 miles, 4451’ of climbing
Lunch - bring food to enjoy or purchase fruit or other things at the corner market at the end of the out and back.

Weather is forecast to be considerably better over on that side of the bay. Most likely the roads will be wet and maybe a sprinkle here or there. The forecast calls for around 9 percent chance of rain but as you can see Randoplan says no rain all day. I'll keep an eye out on the weather and cancel if need be as weather dictates.

I'm cancelling for predicted rain, starting around Noon in the urban areas.

Jasmine suggested, to honor Peter, the San Bruno Mountain route, including Guadalupe Canyon Parkway, site of Peter's successful Everesting attempt.  I can't think of a finer tribute than to share the roads he's ridden.  I'm crying as I type this.

Meet at the Pioneer Hotel in Woodside around 8:45 for a 9:00 AM departure.

The forecast weather is for rain.  Wet roads or threatening skies cancel this ride.  Stay tuned for updates.

Lunch:  Los Curates Tacqueira or bring your own.

Meet at the intersection of 84 and 35 at 8:45 for a 9:00 AM departure. We'll have two groups unless it's a small turnout due to weather, with the D/E speedsters launching first, followed by the C+/D Social Climbers. Rain, not sprinkles, cancel and wet roads are a go. As long as it's not really raining I'll be there for the start!! This route provides safe descents during the wettest parts but will need to be careful descending Portola Redwoods State Park. There is the bailout option of skipping the park and just ascending West Alpine.

There is ample parking along Skyline on both sides between Alice's and Skywood Trading Post and is legal, you should see it up here on the weekends

    Distance: 55 miles

    Elevation Gain: 5,459'

Lunch: Bring to enjoy at Portola Redwoods State Park (or buy at Skylonda Trading Post at start of ride)

The weather looks suitable for a Pre-Thanksgiving ride along the coast so let's do a long time favorite. We will take a short detour through Skyine College before descending Sharp Park to Pacifica  and then down to Half Moon Bay for lunch before returning via Tunitas

Meet by the Pioneer Saloon in Woodside at 8:45 for a 9:00 departure. There will be two groups.  The DE group will launch first followed by the Social Climbers.

60 miles with 5000 feet of elevation gain.

Right now the forecast looks like rain, so keep an eye out for a likely cancellation.  But just in case the weather forecast changes...  This is the same ride I posted 8 weeks ago, but had to cancel due to poor AQI numbers.

Let's do some old friends, but in a different directions than we have in recent times.

Redwood Gulch to 9 to Skyline to Alpine, followed by 84, West Old La Honda, and for something really new, we'll come down 84 and take the loop back to Shoup.  I really wanted to take 9 all the way to Skyline in lieu of Redwood, but Quickmap shows there are currently a number of one way controls to Redwood Gulch from Tollgate while they continue to clear old slides.
