Join Gilbert Sy (gilbertsy@yahoo.com, 650.787.5361) and Don Lapin (donl@ladue.com, 415.297.6456) for a seaside jaunt before the Hwy. 1 bridge at Big Sur reopens (Caltrans estimates that the bridge will reopen in mid-October).
Meet at 9:45 am for a 10:00 am start, in Parking Lot 4 at Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park Campground (coords. 36.2445682,-121.7767245); also see Pfeiffer_campground_map.pdf
From Hwy. 1 south, turn left into the main park entrance, go past the kiosk and look for Day Use Lot #4. There is a day use fee of $10.
To access the closed part of Hwy. 1, we will walk our bikes about 1/4 mile (400' climb with steps) along the Bypass Trail near Campsite 31. Bring a pair of walking shoes for the hike, and a small day pack to for holding them while you ride.
The C+ and D routes are essentially the same, going south to Naciamento-Fergusson Road and then returning. The Ds get a small taste of Nacimiento-Fergusson Road (steep). Because the route is an out-and-back, however, you can stop anywhere along the way. Eateries appear to be mostly toward the northern end of the route. Be sure to bring adequate water and snacks.
