Western Wheelers Bicycle Club

Candidates for 2026 Board of Directors

President: Jonathan Penn

I’ve been a Western Wheelers member for six years, as I began inching towards retirement and biking more regularly. When I started looking for a club, Western Wheelers quickly stood out. To me, is unlike any other club in the Bay Area: the camaraderie and openness to riders, the frequency of rides posted, special ride series like the LDTs, the Sequoia (which I refer to as “Gratuitously Challenging”, especially while riding it), and the many great events that we put on for our members, all make Western Wheelers stand out. My wife joined the club a few years after me, and now it gives us another thing to share. I feel I get so much out of the club, and being a board member is a big way for me to step up and give back to the group. I also advocate for safe cycling and safer streets, working with San Mateo BPAC and on various grass-roots efforts whenever I can.

Secretary: Robin Davis

I’ve been a Western Wheelers member for over 10 years and have biked many years longer than that. I tend to socially ride with the C- group. I appreciate the Western Wheelers for the friendship and family the group offers. One of my favorite rides is the Los Altos to Los Gatos 4th Sunday ride. I also enjoy the weekend away rides for the variety of scenery and chance to get to know the club’s riders better. I’ve led several rides and hope to lead many more going forward. I’ve also volunteered for many events. I’d be thrilled to continue to serve as the club’s Secretary.

When I’m not riding, I’m often crunching numbers of some type as an actuary and former financial planner. I enjoy dinner parties, going out to enjoy music, reading, gardening, remodeling projects, hiking, and traveling.

I look forward to seeing you out there!

Treasurer: Mike Rissi

I have been the Club Treasurer for several years and built a strong financial foundation for the Club with a healthy reserve. I actively participate in Club activities, including finance team leader for the Sequoia. I’m a strong advocate for recreational cycling to promote fitness and a healthy lifestyle. I have served as Treasurer and President for several local nonprofits - including the Portola Valley Schools Foundation and Music for Minors. My business background includes 30 years with Accenture, where I retired as a Managing Partner.

I also played saxophone in an R&B cover band for 12 years.

Ride Chair: Guy Shuman

I have been an active member and leader in Western Wheelers since 2003 and am regularly one the top ride leaders in the club, having led over 700 rides. I have served the club as C Ride Coordinator, D Ride Coordinator, Ride Chair, Email Lists Administrator, Sequoia Transportation Captain, Board of Directors Member, and for the past 16 years as coordinator of the LDT series. I believe our club's main focus should be on rides of all levels by and for our members. Board members should be active club participants in all aspects of the club's activities. It has been my privilege to serve on the Western Wheelers Board for the past eight years and hope to continue in 2026.

Events Chair:  Deirdre Crommie

It was only when I joined Western Wheelers in Sept 2022 that cycling became its own way of life! I had a lot of experience prior to this. As a UCSF grad student, my route from the Mission over 17th Street taught me respect for the bike and the hills. I further honed my skills on the roads of Boston. Then arriving in Palo Alto in 2001 with kids in tow we did frequent bike camping.

Joining the Western Wheelers, it became something more. It became a way to be in a great community, keep fit and enjoy other people. I started with the LDTs, got the right equipment and dug into routes and rides, amazed at what this club offers. This has been an exhilarating and life-changing experience. I love this community and look forward to working together to uphold our wonderful traditions.

Membership Chair: Greg Frees

After retiring from a 34-year engineering career developing hard disk drives, I joined Western Wheelers in 2023 at the recommendation of a friend. I was looking for exercise, a good excuse to get outside, and social interaction with new friends. Western Wheelers proved to be a perfect fit! Joining the club has improved my health, provided beautiful views of places I’d never seen before, and most importantly… provided a new group of friends that I enjoy being with each week. Riding with the club several times a week has become a very important component of my retirement and life. And because it is so valuable to me, I want to see others join the club and enjoy its many benefits too! I am happy to be the Membership Chair to assist others in joining our wonderful club.

Sequoia Chair:

A 5-person "Sequoia Steering Committee" has volunteered to jointly run the Sequoia for 2025. The committee is comprised of Nick Baker, David Schorow, Jon Penn, and Lucinda Layton. We are looking for one more person to handle logistics at Foothill College.

Flat Tyre Chief Editor: Robin Jeffries

I’ve been a member of Western Wheelers for 12 years, since I retired and finally had time to regularly cycle.  I’ve ridden on many a C ride and have led a few.  During the pandemic, I helped out as an editor for several issues of the Flat Tyre, so I know what is involved in this job.

To me, the Flat Tyre is the main point of contact between club members and club leadership, and I’d like to make it more valuable to members looking for additional touch points with the club and more opportunities to get to know their fellow Western Wheelers.

Pre-retirement, I was a user experience designer and researcher.  I ended my career working at Google, and while I no longer even dabble in user experience, I see usability problems everywhere and am passionate about getting them fixed.  (Don’t ask me what ridewithgps could do better unless you have time for a long answer.)

Webmaster: David Schorow

I’ve been bicycling for enjoyment and fitness since my college days in Boston.  I was introduced to California cycling when I came to Berkeley for graduate studies.  Cycling and other outdoor activities have been my passion for most of my adult life.  I even met my wife Mona on a group ride at The Bicycle Outfitter.

In June, 2017 I retired from a long career in the computer industry, with the last 10 years as a manager and director of software development.  The Western Wheeler Bike Club provided me the means to do a variety of beautiful rides with fun people, many of whom have become good friends.  I was the club President for five years, from 2018 thru 2023. I want to continue to contribute to the club by being the Webmaster.

Members at Large

Member at Large: Jenny Warila

I was an avid cyclist and Western Wheelers member throughout the 90’s, but life got in the way for the next 20 years. Fortunately I found my way back as the pandemic was waning in 2021. I love riding with my club and giving back through volunteering for the Sequoia and serving on the board.

When I’m not cycling, I run my own training and consulting business, sing in a 40’s Girl Group, volunteer at Kara as a grief counselor, and serve on the board of Ventana School. I’m so happy to offer my energy and enthusiasm to the club as a board member-at-large, to contribute to its regular operations and help ensure it’s around for future generations of cyclists.

Member at Large: Gloria Kreitman

In 2021 I retired from Cisco Systems, Mergers & Acquisitions Group where I led strategic planning and execution of complex global programs.

Free from that life of deadlines and back-to-back meetings, I bought a bike and joined Western Wheelers!  Since then, I’ve learned so much about safe cycling through the Skills Training Classes and participated in the exciting ride series offered throughout the year—from social A and B rides to challenging LDT, Eastern Sierra Escape and Fall Fun Series.  I enjoyed many fun picnics and parties and made wonderful new friends along the journey.

I’m eager to serve as a Member at Large on the Western Wheelers Board.  It is a great opportunity to contribute to an organization that I am passionate about and has become a major part of my cycling experience.

Member at Large: Carina Rossner

I joined the club in 2020 with Richard Exley's help - he taught me the basics and got me to where Vern Tucker could take over my biking education.  Since then, I've enjoyed the weekly rides, the LDT rides (especially the away weekends), the Napa rides and many other fun adventures on wheels with the club.  I've volunteered at social events, helped with the Sequoia, started the Single Cyclists ride series, and hosted a number of informational events like the most recent one about bike fit at Revolutions in Fitness.

I am a strong believer in the power of people coming together to create events, share information, and grow. I have benefited so much from the club and especially from the generosity of kind people in the club and am eager to contribute even more as a board member.  I hope to support existing club programs as well as create some new ones like "World Wide Western Wheelers" to help club members share their experiences with cycling trips out of the local area.
