2025 Sequoia Volunteering

Registration

  • Laydown RouteArrows marking route segments and place warning signs

    There is approximately 150 miles of road to cover between 3 teams of 3 people
  • All RouteArrows and signs must be removed within two days of the event, 3 teams of 2 people.
  • Town of Woodside for a 2-4 hour shift.
    Monitors show riders where to turn and/or remind riders to stop at stop signs. (Does not interact with or direct traffic. This is a safe job and you can sit.)
  • Email captain Eben Haber (eben@habers.us) answering the following questions:

    How early are you willing to start?
    How late can you work?
    How long are you willing to drive?
    What kind of bike rack do you have, if any?
  • You must be a licensed HAM operator with your own portable radio to fill this position. Please add your callsign after your last name when signing up.
  • Setup check-in area (tables, power, etc). Greet and check-in pre-registered riders. Distribute wristbands and route sheets.

  • Setup and Cleanup catered lunch at Huddart park
  • Setup and Cleanup for BBQ lunch event at Jon Penn's house in Belmont. Need 1 volunteer to take items from & return them to WWBC locker in Cupertino.
  • Volunteers will set up the rest stop, serve snacks to riders, provide information, and close the rest stop. RS Open 7:30am-10am

  • Person picks up truck on Friday 5/30, drives to club storage locker, drive to home, then to PV Church Saturday, then be avail to return truck to Palo Alto Sunday late afternoon - talk to Brian Kaplan for details
  • #1 Bike Hut 9am-11:30pm (BH), then drive to Foothill, then 12:30-:2:30pm (FH)
    #2 BH & FH 11am-1:30pm (BH), then drive to Foothill, then 2:30-4:30 (FH)
    #3 Foothill 12-5pm
  • Set up banners and pennants for decoration and to direct riders. First for start then for finish line. Requires some heavy lifting and strength.
  • Take down pennants, banners. Requires some heavy lifting and strength.
  • Foothill Starting Area Set up. Set up tables, chairs, and bike racks. Lifting of less than 20lbs, and a little squatting & stooping involved.
  • Help decorate the start/finish arch. Then guide riders to safely exit out of Foothill College. (Cyclists need to make a right turn at the bottom of the hill.)
  • Foothill Finish Line & lunch area setup. Setup tables, chairs, awnings, and bike racks. Move arch. Unload other amenities from truck. Lifting of less than 20lbs, and a little squatting & stooping involved.
  • Foothill AM Parking and Traffic management. Direct riders to parking lots 1 and 8. Assist in locating available spaces. Direct drop-off and overflow parkers to lot 2. Can accommodate those wanting to ride the shorter Sequoia routes (coordinate with Dale).
  • Setup bike valet area, fence and bike racks. Manage bike check in and claim checks while riders enjoy finish area celebration. E-Bikes may require some heavy lifting.

  • Direct and cheer riders as they approach and cross finish line; direct riders to rest rooms, keep lunch area clean & empty trash.

After you finish registering for a job, you can register again for another job or shift.

In addition to regular volunteers, the Sequoia has 32 Captains roles to drive key aspects of the event. One of these captain positions still needs to be filled (see below).


Critical Volunteer Positions Needed

These positions are in critical need of volunteers

1b–Monday or Tuesday Sign Pickup and RouteArrow Removal, Mike Yadlowsky

4d–Sunday 9:30AM- 3:30PM Rest Stop: Kings Mt., Captain Warren Chan

4m–Sunday 5:30PM-8:00PM Transportation Load the truck at Foothill, Captain Guy Shuman

5a–Sunday 4:00AM-6:00AM Banners Setup, Bruce Maule Captain
Set up banners and pennants for decoration and to direct riders. 

5b–Sunday 4:30PM-6:00PM Banners Take-down, Bruce Maule Captain
Take down pennants, banners. Requires some heavy lifting and strength.

5c–Sunday 4:00AM-8:30AM Start Area Setup, Paula Kienert Captain
Foothill Starting Area Set up. Set up tables, chairs, and bike racks.

5d–Sunday 5:00AM-9:00AM Arch Setup & Guide Riders, Paula Kienert Captain
Help decorate the start/finish arch. Then guide riders to safely exit out of Foothill College.

5f–Sunday 4:45AM-9:00AM Parking & Traffic, Dale Gill Captain
Foothill AM Parking and Traffic management. Direct riders to parking lots 1 and 8. Assist in locating available spaces. Direct drop-off and overflow parkers to lot 2. 

5k–Sunday 2:00PM-6:00PM Bike Check Valet, Shift C, Paul Wendt Captain

For many of these positions, you can volunteer and still ride the Sequoia! Position 1b is on a day after the Sequoia. Positions 5a, 5c, 5d, 5f are early morning jobs, allowing for doing one of the shorter routes afterwards. Positions 4m and possibly 5b are late in the day so can be done after doing the ride.

The discount applies to most items in-store, with only a few exclusions. It can be stacked with any current store promotions. The discounts will be available for one week after the ride and will require a discount code that will be emailed to volunteers.

Captain Position Needed

Route Monitor Captain Role

The Route Monitor Captain is responsible for:

  • Recruiting volunteers (previous markers and friends. They don’t have to be WW members)
  • Building the plan, communicating the plan, and overseeing the team. For example, see the 2024 plan.  
  • Developing the shift schedule for volunteers on the day of the Sequoia
  • Making arrangements to get supplies from the WWBC Storage Locker.
