Hey Wheelers, on April 15th, let's go ride around the bucolic Sutter Buttes, “The World’s Smallest Mountain Range” on Bike Around the Buttes 2023!
They have four route options: an easy 20 mi/490 ft, a moderate 42 mi/510 ft, a challenging 70 mi/915 ft, and a full century 102 mi/855 ft. that goes around the Buttes twice!
This is a fully supported event, organized by a NorCal Lions Club, with fun well-placed rest stops, SAG support, bright route marking with RouteArrows! and a festive finish line BBQ meal and live music!
I plan to arrive on Friday and stay in the nearby town of Colusa, just west of Sutter, about 20 minutes away. There are no hotels/lodging in Sutter. I’ll probably ride the 70-mile route at a moderate / social pace, or maybe the “Once Around” 42-mile route, if I can’t find my legs by then. The ride start times vary, but I'll probably start rolling around 7am.
Of course, you are free to ride any of the four routes offered, and if you’d like to do your first 100-mile century, this is a great choice! The local hills and fields are busting out bright green and there should be plentiful wildflowers and almond blossoms too!
This area has very quiet low-traffic roads, lots of nature, some cows and sheep, almonds and walnuts, old stone walls and a short segment along the Sacramento River. The event's high point is only 363 ft, on the south flank of the Buttes, and the 70-mile route goes over that lofty summit twice!
Bike Around the Buttes: B+C/ .5 / 20, 42, 70, 102 miles
