The Bicycle Thief (also known as The Bicycle Thieves or Ladri di biciclette) is a 1948 Italian neorealist film directed by Vittorio De Sica. It follows the story of a poor father searching post-World War II Rome for his stolen bicycle--his only means to support his young family.

Adapted for the screen by Cesare Zavattini from the 1946 novel by Luigi Bartolini, the film stars Lamberto Maggiorani as the desperate father and Enzo Staiola as his plucky young son. The Bicycle Thief received an Academy Honorary Award for most outstanding foreign language film in 1950, and in 1952 was deemed the greatest film of all time by Sight & Sound magazine's poll of filmmakers and critics. Fifty years later, another poll organized by the same magazine ranked it the sixth greatest film ever made, and Turner Classic Movies cited it as one of the most influential films in cinema history.

The Bicycle Thief is in Italian with English subtitles and has a running time of 1 hour, 33 min.  Click here to watch the trailer.

We will continue our monthly bike film nights in 2021, so stay tuned. See you at the movies!
