    WWBC Spring Picnic is Sunday, April 28!

     

    Spring is nature's way of saying, 'Let's Party!' Come enjoy great company and delicious food at the Western Wheelers' annual Spring Picnic. We will be at Cuesta Park in Mountain View. The party will begin at 1 pm in the large group picnic area off Cuesta Drive (opposite Nilda Avenue).

    In the Western Wheelers' tradition, we will have good eats, as well as delicious cookies, and bottomless refreshments. Please register so we have enough for all. There will be rides scheduled to cycle to the picnic to work up an appetite and start the party, so check out our ride calendar to find your ride.


                   Please Register by Thursday, April 25

    (Each family member needs to register separately; 

    non-member guests are $10 each)

    Fundraising Cycling Experience

    Benefitting the Coastside Community


    Join the Western Wheelers Bicycle Club on Sunday June 2, 2024 at The Sequoia for a thrilling cycling experience set amidst the captivating coastal mountains and redwood forests of the San Francisco Bay Area. With a variety of course options including Century, Challenge, Metric Century, and Fun Rides, The Sequoia offers a chance to immerse yourself in the "Challengingly Beautiful" mountain scenery that defines our region. 

    Hosted entirely by dedicated volunteers, our mission is to foster a love for recreational cycling in the Bay Area's stunning landscape, welcoming cyclists of many levels to revel in the excitement and camaraderie of our event. Beyond the ride, your participation supports local coastside communities and cycling organizations. To date, the Western Wheelers Bicycle Club has donated over $59,600 from The Sequoia to coastside charities and cycling organizations.

      The IRS requires gift receipts only for donations of $250 or more.  Your support is greatly appreciated, but you won't receive any documentation from either Western Wheelers or the charities related to this additional $25.

      The Sequoia 2024 Critical Volunteer Positions


      Day of the Ride – Sunday, June 2

      Foothill College Start Area AM Parking & Traffic: 5:00AM – 9:00AM, Greet and guide riders/volunteers coming in entrance road to Lot 1. Captain: Judy DeFranco

      SAG: Drivers follow assigned routes to assist riders. SAG volunteers can be passengers in cars or drive alone and may be accompanied by a HAM radio volunteer. Each driver can expect to drive 100-200 miles over the course of a 3–5-hour shift. You will carry a pump, repair parts (tires, tubes, and cables), light snacks and water, all except water, supplied by the club. Driver can receive payment of $40 to defray the cost of gasoline.

      We will be sending out SAG drivers on the course in a rolling fashion throughout the day. After signing up, send an email to team captain Eben Haber (eben@habers.us) answering the following questions:

      • How early are you willing to start?
      • How late can you work?
      • How long are you willing to drive?
      • What kind of bike rack do you have, if any?

      Captain: Eben Haber

      Radio Communications: YOU MUST BE A LICENSED HAM OPERATOR to volunteer for this activity as well as provide your own radio. Radio operators serve a 4 to 6-hour shift, either in a fixed location or roving SAG vehicles. Radio operators may either be a passenger or drive the vehicle. Fixed locations include Start/Finish (Lot 1D) & 5 rest stops. Captain: Bob DeFranco

      Emergency Phone Contact: Foothill College & Finish Line area w radio/sag team. Early shift 6:00AM – 12;00PM. Use Event Only Google Number to receive calls from riders needing SAG assistance. Relay emergency information to radio/sag crew. You will use an EVENT SPECIFIC Google Number to be printed on the route sheets. 

      Rest Stops: Volunteers will set up the rest stop, serve snacks to riders, provide information, and close the rest stop. Start time may be staggered among volunteers. Some may be asked to pick up supplies at Foothill College on Saturday. Others may be asked to deliver equipment and leftover food back to Foothill College. Plan on adding an hour before the shift or after the shift. Rest Stops at La Honda (Filled), Loma Mar Store (Filled), Bike Hut, Kings Mt., Portola Valley (Filled).

      Foothill College Finish Area Setup: 1person 4:00AM + 2 more at 5:00AM-9:00AM Setup Finish Area 1E  Captain: Russ Hull

      Foothill College Flags, and Pendants: Gather flags and pendants from the locker. Set up at the start of day in Lot 1.  Move to the Finish Line later in the morning, Lot 1E. Take down flags, signs and pendants at end of the day and return to locker. Two shifts, 5:00AM-9:30AM, 3:00PM-6:00PM Captain: Don DeFever

      Bike Parking Valet: 3 shifts; 11:00AM-2:00PM, 12:00PM-3:30PM, 2:00PM - 6:00PM Set up bike racks and provide security while riders have finish line meal. Retrieve/return bikes to riders. Teardown. Captain: Paul Wendt

      Foothill College Finish Area Hospitality: 2 Shifts, 11:00AM-3:00PM,  3:00PM-7:00PM.  Setup, flagging, concierge, Finish Line Arch, sodas, cleanup. Direct and cheer returning riders to the lunch spot, and clear tables. Captain: Connie Jorgensen

      Transportation - Load the truck: With help from site volunteers, the crew will load the large truck with all the supplies going back to the WW storage locker. The crew will also assist with general site cleanup as needed. 5:30 PM - 8:00 PM Transportation Captain: Guy Shuman. 


      Saturday, June 8

      Workers' Ride: Ride Leaders needed for 3 -4 options.

      Workers' Party: Set up for a catered meal and have fun!
