HillsRUs rolls weekly on Wednesdays

Route often includes Hwy 9, Page Mill, Old La Honda, Kings Mountain, West Alpine or Tunitas Creek. Always be prepared for variable weather on Skyline. Foul weather in the hills keeps the ride in the valley.

Start location and route announced Monday prior, via wwbc-rides email list and this page (scroll down to the blog).

Meet at 8:45 AM and roll at 9:00 AM departure. DE riders will depart first, C+ will follow.

Ride Leaders rotate weekly - Don Johann, Shawnery Hardin, Jack Jones and Steve Rempel, with guest appearances by Michael Khaw, Gary Virshup, Cathy Switzer, and others.

A selection of routes can be found in the WW Ride with GPS Route Catalog > use tag "HRU".

It's been 10 months since the last time we did this route, so let's do something just a little different - San Bruno Mountain via Skyline and Pacifica.  It's a ride and set of views I really like, even though this route is a bit more urban than a typical HRU ride.  The forecast looks pretty ideal - warmish at the end, but cool on the climbs.

Note that this ride starts at the Pioneer Inn Parking in Woodside.  We'll ride along Skyline, before dropping down into Pacifica, then working our way back up to Skyline, and over to the base of San Bruno Mountain.  We'll climb the mountain for the (hopefully) killer views and then descend to Daly City for some great Tacos, before working our way through the City of the Dead, almost to SFO, and then back up to Skyline, for the final downwind leg of our journey.

Starting time and location:  Meet at the Pioneer Inn at 8:45 for a 9:00 start

    Distance: 62 miles

    Elevation gain: 5250'

    Ride Leader:  Steve Rempel

Bring or buy lunch at the Taqueria in Daly City.

It's time to visit Santa Cruz again.  We will depart from Lexington Reservoir and cross the mountains to Capitola. After checking out the views of the ocean we will head to Corralitos for lunch before climbing through the beautiful Eureka Canyon and back to Summit Road and Old Santa Cruz Hwy. Weather promises to be mild with the only hot part the slog around Lexington at the end.

Starting Location: Parking Lot .3 mi past the dam at Lexington Reservoir. There is now a $6 fee to park there (Credit/Debit Card). There is also a dirt area across the street from the parking lot that can handle about 6 cars.

Directions: take the Bear Creek Rd exit off of Hwy 17, go across Hwy 17 and turn left like you were getting on 17. Take Alma Bridge Rd and go .6 mi to the parking lot just past the dam

Start Time: be there by 8:45 for a  9 am departure.

    Distance: 62 miles

    Elevation: 4900 feet

LunchBring or Buy to eat at the park across from Corralitos Market

Big Basin just reopened last Friday, the 22nd, so let's go check out the new asphalt on Highway 236.  I hear it's smooth as silk, and the weather forecast looks pretty ideal.  With limited car access, this is the perfect time to climb through the Big Basin and see how the park has evolved after the fire.

Note that the start is at Monta Vista Park in Cupertino, just like our Zayante adventure a few weeks ago.  The park is just off Foothill at Voss Ave.

This is a social-paced D ride (we are after all the Wednesday Social Climbers) with regroups; faster riders are encouraged to form a D+/E group. Rain cancels.

Start: Monte Vista Park, rolling at 9 AM

Lunch: Around mile 30, we'll stop in Boulder Creek for lunch.   There is no water in Big Basin, so we'll all need to load up in Boulder Creek for the 23 miles of climbing up 236 and Highway 9.

The road work on Skyline between Bear Creek and Black is finally finished so let's do one of our favorite routes to Zayante!

For HRU this week, let's go do one of my favorites, the Flintstone House and the Carolands Mansion.  Coming back from both a vacation and Omicron, it was tough to pick a ride, but should I falter, Cathy has graciously volunteered to pick up the slack and get you all home safely.   There are two crazy steep, but also quite short hills in this route, however, both can be easily bypassed.

The weather forecast is looking better and better each day.  If it holds, this may be one of those Goldilocks days, which you all deserve, after enduring last week's furnace fun.

This is a social-paced D ride (we are after all the Wednesday Social Climbers) with regroups; faster riders are encouraged to form a D+/E group. Rain cancels.

Start: Shoup Park, rolling at 9 AM

Lunch: Around mile 35, we'll hit the Safeway at the Crystal Springs shopping center on Polhemus.   There is also a Starbucks and a Bakery.

From the shopping center there will be water and restrooms about 4 miles later, at the Pulgas Water Temple.

    D/4.8 (5580')/47 Hills R Us

Climbing early, looking for shade. Starting with Montebello, we’ll then head up and back Stevens Canyon, turn up Redwood Gulch and return along Skyline to Page Mill.  Bring two full water bottles and food.

Note: if Stevens Canyon is still closed from San Juan to Montebello (from a fallen power pole), we will skip Montebello and take Pierce/Mt. Eden to Stevens Canyon and Redwood Gulch. (If you download both routes, that’s a guarantee that Stevens Canyon will be open!)

Start Location: Shoup Park, Los Altos

    Distance: 47 miles
    Elevation Gain: 5,589’
    Weather: Warm to Hot
Lunch: Bring, enjoy at Alpine Lake, mile 36

Lunch: Lunch will be at the San Benito House Garden Deli in Half Moon Bay. There can be a long line to order so you might want to order ahead and here's a link: https://sanbenitohouse.com/garden-deli-cafe . I would estimate we'd be there around 12:30
