HillsRUs

HillsRUs rolls weekly on Wednesdays

Route often includes Hwy 9, Page Mill, Old La Honda, Kings Mountain, West Alpine or Tunitas Creek. Always be prepared for variable weather on Skyline. Foul weather in the hills keeps the ride in the valley.

Start location and route announced Monday prior, via wwbc-rides email list and this page (scroll down to the blog).

Meet at 8:45 AM and roll at 9:00 AM departure. DE riders will depart first, C+ will follow.

Ride Leaders rotate weekly - Shawnery Hardin, Steve Rempel, Brian Feinberg, and Mark Huie with guest appearances by Michael Khaw, Gary Virshup, Cathy Switzer, and others.

A selection of routes can be found in the WW Ride with GPS Route Catalog > use tag "HRU".

It's going to be warm on our side of the hill this week, so let's do another HRU Classic - Half Moon Bay from Woodside, with a little Purisima-Higgins bypass, to find some cooler air on the coast.

Meet at the Pioneer Parking in Woodside for a 9AM roll.

51 miles, with about 5700 feet of climbing.

Lunch in Half Moon Bay at the San Benito House, just one street north of Kelly.

I haven't actually led a coastal classic ride before, this seems like it'll be a good day for it. Returning via 84/WOLH instead of Tunitas because why not. Little mod in the route to go through La Honda.

Meet at the Pioneer Parking in Woodside for a 9AM roll.

69 miles, with about 6000 feet of climbing.

Lunch at Archangeli, relatively late in the ride to bring snacks if you tend to get peckish. I personally will likely check out the goodies at the bakery next to Duarte's, Heart and Soul Treats, before sitting down at the picnic tables.

It's going to be a bit warmish in Silicon Valley this week, so let's do another HRU Classic - Devil's Slide, with a little jailbird bypass, and find some cooler air on the coast.

Meet at the Pioneer Parking in Woodside for a 9AM roll.

60 miles, with about 5000 feet of climbing.

Lunch in Half Moon Bay.  Most people will likely eat at Mc Dutra Park on the corner of Kelly and Main, but some will prefer to eat at the San Benito House just one street north.

With Lexington Elementary starting classes this week, we'll gather at the usual Lexington Alma Bridge parking lot.

There are two routes- the longer one climbs Rodeo Gulch while the shorter one cuts off part of Soquel San Jose Road and takes Laurel Glen Road instead, then getting back on the main route. That cuts off almost seven miles and 600 feet of climbing.

Starting Location: Parking Lot .3 mi past the dam at Lexington Reservoir. There is a $6 fee to park there (Credit/Debit Card). There is also a free dirt area across the street from the parking lot that can handle about 8 cars.

Directions: take the Bear Creek Rd exit off of Hwy 17, go across Hwy 17 and turn left like you were getting on 17. Take Alma Bridge Rd and go .6 mi to the parking lot just past the dam

Start Time: 8:45 for a 9 am departure. Moderate rain cancels.

    Distance: 53/46 miles

    Elevation: 4900/4400 feet

Lunch: BYOL to eat at Shugart/Siltaner Park in Scotts Valley.

    Huckleberries - HRU - Eureka, it's Wednesday

    Aug 5th, 2026

    C+/D/3.6(6442)/71

Got to make up for Brian's winter route last week. It's a big ride, but the hardest, only hard climb, is right out of the gate. Everything else is super manageable, especially Eureka Canyon. If you're worried about descending Zyante, don't be, it's got magnificent asphalt, and is usually light on traffic.

Meet at 8:45am for a 9:00am start at Lexington Elementary School, https://maps.app.goo.gl/6M7cxAN8V5FQGwL46?g_st=ac

Lunch: Pixie Deli, right after we exit Sea Cliff Beach, it will be to the left. This is a sit down restaurant with great choices and abundant seating.

    71 miles, 6442’ of climbing.

Sorry for the late email, just realized it was my at-bat here -

this route from the library struck my fancy. I haven't done either Sanborn or Toll Gate in a while so it's time for some different suffering. :)

In the event that lower Pierce does have construction my plan is to return via Mt. Eden instead. We shall see.

Start at Shoup Park, 9am. There isn't really an obvious place for a lunch stop, so maybe just a longer stop at Sanborn Park to eat bars or what have you.

I'm going to pull a Shawnery and paint a bit outside the lines for this one.  I like to do San Bruno Mtn once a year, but this time I want to shorten the distance and add in one more climb - Sweeney Ridge, which we usually skip.  Unlike a typical HRU, you'll have to look hard to spot any redwoods along the route.

I plan to park along Skyline heading south, well above the entrance to Sawyer Camp, in the shade, just as you drive into the trees.  There is quite a bit of parking along this southbound shoulder up high, with an easy coast to the start.  If you want to add 20 miles extra, park at the Pioneer and ride to the start.  Or to add 8 miles, park at Edgewood and Canada.

Assemble at the entrance to Crystal Springs Sawyer Camp entrance for a 9AM departure.   There are restrooms, but no water until the end of the trail.

49 miles, with about 5000 feet of climbing.

Lunch at the Los Cuates Taqueria at the bottom of San Bruno Mtn, after the climb.

This weather is begging for a comparatively cool, coastal ride and the Bike Hut Classic is ending this week, so the choice is clear.

For something starting in Los Altos, this will be as no frills of a Bike Hut ride as it can be: leaving from Shoup, we'll go out to and up Old La Honda, down WOLH/84, out to San Gregorio and have lunch at the Bike Hut. Then with leaden lunch legs, we'll try to ride our best times up Tunitas. From there we will descend Kings Mountain Road, and return back through Portola Valley by way of Mountain Home.

There aren't many easy bail outs for this ride, but it can be cut a bit shorter by starting and ending somewhere on the lollipop stick of this route. Somewhere like Portola Valley town center where we'll regroup, arriving there around 9:40. That saves 18 miles and 1300', and ends about 5 degrees cooler.

Regroups at Portola Valley town center, the top of OLH, La Honda, San Gregorio (probably very briefly), the top of Tunitas/Kings, and Portola Valley town center again.

Starting Location: Shoup Park (park along University or Lincoln Avenues as a courtesy to the park users)

Start Time: 8:45 for a 9 am departure.

    Distance: 59 miles
    Elevation: 5500 feet

Lunch: BYOL to eat at the Bike Hut

Let's do another one of Don's HRU favorites that's also a favorite of mine.  West Alpine can be a hot box in the summer, so I like to take advantage of days when it's cool with a little overcast, and the forecast for this Wednesday looks pretty ideal.

Assemble at the Shoup for a 9AM departure.

52 miles, with 5500+ feet of climbing.

Lunch at the duck pond at the top of Alpine, which has water, but no food, so BYO.

    Route

Weather from Randoplan (on the cool side, but not cold)
