HillsRUs

HillsRUs rolls weekly on Wednesdays

Route often includes Hwy 9, Page Mill, Old La Honda, Kings Mountain, West Alpine or Tunitas Creek. Always be prepared for variable weather on Skyline. Foul weather in the hills keeps the ride in the valley.

Start location and route announced Monday prior, via wwbc-rides email list and this page (scroll down to the blog).

Meet at 8:45 AM and roll at 9:00 AM departure. DE riders will depart first, C+ will follow.

Ride Leaders rotate weekly - Shawnery Hardin, Steve Rempel, Brian Feinberg, and Mark Huie with guest appearances by Michael Khaw, Gary Virshup, Cathy Switzer, and others.

A selection of routes can be found in the WW Ride with GPS Route Catalog > use tag "HRU".

Throwing in some stuff on this side of the hill for Wednesday. Lunch is relatively late in the route but it's all a bit front loaded and thus. There's a lot of up in this route, but one can certainly choose to skip the West Bear Gulch out and back and cut out a bunch of it.

Let's do one of Don's HRU favorites that's also a favorite of mine.

Assemble at the Lexington reservoir parking lot for a 9AM departure.

53 miles, with 5000+ feet of climbing.

Lunch at Shugart/Siltaner Park in Scotts Valley, which has water, but no food, so BYO.

I've been meaning to lead a climb up Bohlman since November, but rain was in the forecast whenever I remembered, and that is not a road to descend in the wet.

We'll leave from Shoup Park and head straight down Foothill and Stevens Creek to Monta Vista park and pick up anyone there. Then we'll take the maze, up the hard way to the end of Bohlmann via Norton, Kittredge, Quickert, On Orbit. Return via Bohlman and Pierce/Mt. Eden to Rancho San Antonio for lunch. Then finish via Mora, Moody, and Foothills Nature Preserve.

This is a route with many bailout options:

    • Easiest, but not nearly as much fun, would be to meet up with the group as it rides by Monta Vista Park, and finish there on the way back. That almost halves the distance, but retains most of the climbing- 25 miles and 3300 feet.

We will not be stopping, so people should be at the intersection, ready to go by around 9:15.

    • Anyone who wants to skip lunch at Rancho San Antonio can return via Foothill Expressway, the previous HRU Bohlman route: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/30107145- 36 miles and 3600 feet.
    • Doing lunch, but skipping Foothills Nature Preserve saves 9 miles and 1100 feet. https://ridewithgps.com/routes/55182330- 40 miles and 4200 feet.

Regroups at the cemetery at the base of Bohlman (both directions), at the bottom of Mt Eden Road (bathroom and water close by), and Vista Hill in Foothills- remember to get water and use the bathroom by the park entrance on the way in because we do not pass it on the way out.

Starting Location: Shoup Park (park along University or Lincoln Avenues)

Start Time: 8:45 for a 9 am departure. Moderate rain cancels.

    Distance: 49 miles

    Elevation: 5300 feet

Lunch: BYOL to eat at Rancho San Antonio

The weather forecast looks wet for this week's ride, but we'll see how things actually appear Wednesday morning because I cannot postpone it to Thursday. Regardless, I'm tempting fate and would like to do a Coastal Classic ride- up OLH, down WOLH (people are free to go to Skylonda and down 84), out to San Gregorio, then to the Bike Hut for lunch, possibly huddled inside if it's cold or raining. The return leg is up Tunitas, down Kings, and back to Shoup via Foothill.

Regroups at the top of OLH, La Honda, San Gregorio, and the top of Tunitas/Kings. After that, everyone will be in a rush to get back.

Some of the roads are going to have water draining across them, so be prepared for a dirty bike.

Starting Location: Shoup Park (park along University or Lincoln Avenues)

Start Time: 8:45 for a 9 am departure. Moderate rain cancels.

    Distance: 56 miles

    Elevation: 5200 feet

Lunch: BYOL to eat at the Bike Hut

    The Reverse Slide Ride

    April 8th, 2026

    C+/D/3.3(5385)/65.7

For those worried about 1 leading up to Devil's Slide, the traffic is usually lighter on this side, and there's actually more sections with shoulder. As for Sharp Park, there is a huge, size of a lane, shoulder, and a trail to the side 3/4ths of the way up.

Meet at 8:45am for a 9:00am start at Pioneer Saloon in Woodside.

Lunch: Will be at Devil's Slide, so bring lunch or pick something up in Half Moon Bay proper.

    65.7 miles, 5385’ of climbing.

The weather gods finally smiled on Mark last week, and now they are forsaking me, so just in case it actually does rain, we'll stay a little closer to home, and do a route that is loosely based on a night ride I used to do after work many years ago, when dinosaurs still roamed silicon valley.  Because it's April 1st, I'm expecting the unexpected.

Assemble at the Shoup parking lot by 8:45 for a 9:00 departure (park up top), with D/E riders launching a bit before the Social Climbers.

52 miles, with 5150 feet of climbing.

Lunch in Portola Valley at Roberts Market

    Route

Weather from Randoplan (half the weather services predict light rain, and the other half predict zero rain)
