The bicycle may seem a simple form of transportation and sport, but for women around the world it can be a tool of empowerment. Afghan Cycles follows a new generation of young Afghan women who are pedaling their own revolution, aggressively challenging gender and cultural barriers using the bicycle as a literal and metaphorical vehicle for freedom, empowerment and social change.

Afghan Cycles is a 2018 documentary directed by Sarah Menzies and produced by Shannon Galpin. The film won several awards and the Afghanistan women’s cycling team was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2018. You can read more about the film and the filmmaker in Bicycling magazine. The movie has a running time of 90 minutes and you can watch the trailer here.

The talk and screening are free to Western Wheelers and their guests, but please sign up for the Zoom link.

See you at the movies!
