Tier 1-Cycling Fundamentals (Safe and Fast)

Meet at The Bicycle Outfitter at 4 pm for a 4:15 roll out.    


The skills that will be covered in this foundational class focuses on the fundamentals of bike handling and situational awareness and include:   


  - Emergency Stop Technique and Positioning

  - Navigating Common Road Hazards – rocks, sand, and water

  - Low Speed Handling Course with slalom, tight turning, braking drills,

    balance drills


  - Contact Drills On Grass

 - 360 degree situational awareness

Club members with no previous formal training, REGARDLESS of which Western Wheelers groups they ride with, are strongly encouraged to take this class. The focus of this class is bicycle handling for riders of all experience levels.

This class does not include road and traffic skills.

LOGISTICS/PAYMENT-  Information about meeting times and places will be sent to all registrants prior to their class.

The cost to Western Wheelers who are on family or individual memberships in good standing (no guests, please) is $50 per student per class.  (Note that the $50 cost for participants represents a discounted rate subsidized by WWBC.)

Payment is due in full at the time of registration and is non-refundable. Registrations may be transferred to other club members in good standing.


ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR - Matt McNamara is a certified skills instructor through USA Cycling, co-creator of USA Cycling’s Beginner Racer Program (BRP), and a certified Level 1 coach with distinction. In addition, he coaches at the Regional Talent ID Camps each year and has led the U.S. National Team at the Junior Tour of Ireland twice. Over the past several years his attention has turned to the safety and efficacy of non-racers by developing  criteria and a curriculum that serves a broad audience and makes the sport safer for all who enjoy it.
